Foreword
The program committee of the 2007 joint ALEA & AATE national conference is pleased to introduce the refereed, non-refereed papers and keynote addresses gathered together on this web site.
Presenters engaged with the concepts and practices that inform the teaching and learning of Critical Capital. They shared strategies, investigated the critical factors for success, and explored the enabling power of social and cultural capital, that are vital for meeting the needs of a diverse student population and an inclusive, democratic society. They have also demonstrated the validity of our professional associations’ STELLA statements on the critical role of teachers through professional knowledge, practice, and engagement.
The conference provided teachers, educators, policymakers and researchers with the opportunity to network, to be supported and challenged in their teaching beliefs and practices. This collection of papers will allow those who were present to revisit some of the ideas and perspectives articulated at the conference; for those who were unable to attend it will open up new insights and directions that will expand their professional horizons.

The Review Process
Papers submitted for review were managed by the Program Committee.
Papers were blind refereed according to the following process:
All author details were removed from the papers before they were sent to two referees and a unique numerical code was allocated to each paper.
Each referee was required to complete the AATE/ALEA Conference Paper Report and return it to the Editor.
Where both referees accepted the paper, the reports were sent to the author who then was able to consider the feedback and prepare the paper for final publication.
If one referee accepted the paper and one rejected it then the paper was sent to a third referee.
Only those papers accepted by two referees were accepted as refereed papers to be published in the Conference Proceedings.
If both referees did not accept the paper, it was not accepted for publication in the Conference Proceedings.
Referees were selected from volunteer members of the Australian Association for the Teaching of English, the Australian Literacy Educators’ Association and faculties of education in Australian and overseas universities.
Non-refereed papers
Editing, proofreading and style used within the non-refereed papers were the sole responsibility of the authors.
The Conference Organising Committee accepts no responsibility for any errors in or omissions from this publication.
Author Agreement
Unless informed by the author to the contrary, AATE/ALEA deems that a paper submitted has not been published or offered elsewhere and is not the property of any other person or body.
It was the author’s responsibility to obtain any necessary permission from his/her organisation of from any individual or body relating to the publication of the paper or any material used within it.
Such permission was not required to be mentioned in the acknowledgements.
Referees
We would like to acknowledge the helpful critical feedback provided by volunteer referees to the authors of refereed papers. Many of the volunteer referees provided extensive critical feedback.
