Pre-conference Institutes
Delegate Information for Pre-conference Institutes - click here
Pre-conference Institutes will take place from 9:00am – 3:00pm on Thursday, 9 July. The Institutes provide opportunities for participants to focus on particular aspects of English and literacy education. The extended time enables participants to engage in a deeper investigation than is possible during a conference workshop.
Preference will be given to conference delegates. The cost is $90 for conference delegates, $110 for others. Registration details appear on the Conference Registration Form.
Institute 1
Enlivening Literacy through Inquiry and Social Action (Jeffrey Wilhelm, Peggy Wilhelm and Erika Boas)
This highly interactive workshop will explore how literacy is best learned in a context of use. Participants will be helped to frame instruction with an inquiry approach that includes and ends with functional values such as social action. Attention will be given to reading and composing, including ways of helping students to inquire into good reading and composing at the same time that they work to achieve deep disciplinary understandings.
Institute 2
Who's That Clip Clopping Across my Bridge? (Peter O’Connor)
In a hands-on, practical workshop that uses a very familiar story, participants will explore the characters and themes in the story through using a range of process drama conventions. Teachers will investigate how the use of these conventions can enhance their classroom practice and enrich student learning. The strategies explored at the workshop can be used with students at all levels of schooling.
Institute 3
Reading Comprehension: Defining it, teaching it and assessing it (P David Pearson and Scott Paris)
